There is nothing more satisfying than starting from scratch and making yourself your own campfire! It can seem daunting but follow these simple steps and you’ll have the perfect campfire up and roaring in no time!

1. Safety First!
When building your campfire, you should always keep safety in mind, fire can be extremely dangerous if they are not maintained correctly! Either use your campsites designated fire area or keep your fire in the correct area by creating a fire bed. When choosing where to make your fire try to pick somewhere away from trees, bushes or any other form of plants. Your fire should always be on bare earth rather than grass, especially dead grass! Once you’ve found a clear area it’s time to make your campfire! Gather some rocks and place them around the area you would like to have your fire within, then form mud around into a platform.

2. The Essentials
It’s time to find your campfire essentials! For the perfect fire, you’re going to need three types of wood; tinder, kindling and fuel wood.

Tinder –basically what will easily set alight within your campfire, think materials like dry leaves, dry bark/grass or some wood shavings! It’s a good idea to save some time and bring some tinder with you from home, that way you can get started on your campfire without having to search for materials! This is also a good idea if it’s wet outside, as wet tinder will not set on fire!

Kindling – You’ll notice that your tinder burns really quickly, so you’ll need something that is going to keep your campfire going! An easy mistake is to put large logs straight on the fire, however, this often smothers the flame. That’s why you’re going to need kindling! Look for small twigs and branches.

Fuelwood – Fuelwood is what’s going to keep your fire burning! Look for pieces of wood that are about the width of your forearm, this size will catch on fire at a good distance and will continue to burn for long periods of time.

3. Lay Your Fire!
Once you have all the right materials it’s time to lay your campfire! There are several types of campfire, however, the tepee is one of the most popular, it’s great for sitting around and puts out lots of heat. Here’s our easy guide to make the perfect teepee campfire!

  • Stick a long piece of kindling into the ground at a 30-degree angle.
  • Place a tinder bundle underneath the support stick.
  • Place some small pieces of kindling around your tinder nest.
  • Lay small pieces of kindling against the piece stuck in the ground. Add another layer with larger pieces of kindling.
  • Light the tinder, and watch it burn.

4. Put It Out!
Once you’re done with your campfire make sure you ALWAYS put it out! Stopping a fire can often take longer than you think, so always start putting it out 30 minutes before you either go to bed or leave for the day. Use water and sprinkle, don’t pour, it over the campfire until you put out the embers. Test that the fire is out by putting the back of your hand near the ashes if you still feel the heat it’s too hot to leave! Finally, dispose of the remaining ashes.
