The base surface of the sleeping bag will offer some cushioning. although a kip mat is sometimes used for that purpose. A bivy is a waterproof cover for a sleeping bag. which may be used for lightweight travellers. There are two major styles of sleeping bags; the basic style is square blanket that has a zip running around 2 or 3 edges. These bags are either rolled up or packed away in squared holdalls or drawstring compression bags. The second major style of bag is a ‘mummy bag'. As the name suggests. similar in shape to an Egyptian mummy. it tapers from head to toe. meaning a reduced surface area and volume. essentially improving its heat retention. Usually mummy bags have a drawstring. with a lock cord at the head to try and prevent the escape of warm air. Unlike Squared bags ‘mummy's' cannot be rolled. but are instead stuffed inside a sack or compression bag.
